RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ A rising national star in Republican politics is visiting North Carolina to help raise money for students to attend a private Christian school.
Neurosurgeon Ben Carson will be in Raleigh on Thursday to speak at a scholarship fundraiser for Upper Room Christian Academy. Carson was the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is retiring from medicine for a possible life in politics.
Carson made headlines in February when he spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington. He criticized political correctness for stunting healthy debate and he talked about the virtues of a flat tax as President Barack Obama sat nearby, earning him kudos from conservatives.
